Expert Caring Tips for Your Antique Jewellery

Antique jewellery are delicate pieces that need special care every time you clean and store them. There are a lot of elements, such as fluctuations in temperature, hair sprays, perfume and makeup, that can potentially damage your jewellery. That is why you need to handle them with utmost care, because a little precaution can go a long way. So here are some helpful tips to keep in mind caring.

CLEANING TIPS:

  1. Use a small bowl and fill it with warm water. Add 2 to 3 drops of dishwashing soap. Avoid using strong dish soaps, antibacterial soaps and household cleaning products with bleach .
  2. Soak the jewellery into the soapy solution for a minute. Gently swish it back and forth to help loosen up the dirt and grime sticking to the surface of the jewellery.
  3. Remove the piece from the solution. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and clean the jewellery by gently scrubbing it.
  4. Rinse the jewellery thoroughly with warm water. Make sure that the soap has been removed as it can dull the jewellery.
  5. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to dry the jewellery.
  6. Wrap each piece of jewellery with a soft cloth and place them in a padded jewellery box.

  • Do not store silver together with sulfurous metals to prevent tarnish. You can also store your antique silver jewellery in an airtight bag if you plan to place them into a single jewellery box. This prevents air from coming into contact with the sulfurous metals.

  • You can use rubbing alcohol when cleaning earring wires.

  • You can remove grease and grime from your antique gold and platinum jewellery by soaking them in rubbing alcohol.

  • To clean pearls, use a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove oils and perfumes after each wearing.
